In its ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and enhance security in southern Yemen, the Southern Armed Forces have continued their advances in Abyan governorate, targeting Al-Qaeda strongholds.

On January 4, 2025, these forces successfully seized control of the "Wadi Itsaba" camp, located between the districts of Ahwar and Al-Wadee’a, following clashes with the organization’s elements. During the operation, the Southern Forces recovered vehicles that themilitants had previously seized in earlier attacks.

According to the official website of the Southern Armed Forces, the capture of the "Wadi Itsaba" camp came after the successful clearing of areas in Khabr Al-Maraqasha. Al-Qaeda operatives fled their strategic positions under the pressure of the assault. Brigadier General Mukhtar Al-Noubi, Commander of the Abyan Axis, stated that the military campaign had cut off the supply routes of Al-Qaeda elements and assured that operations to track them down and liberate hostages would continue.

These operations are part of the "Arrows of the East" campaign launched by the Southern Forces to pursue and dismantle Al-Qaeda networks in the region. In August 2023, the forces announced their control over Wadi Janan, east of the Mudiyah district, a key stronghold of the organization in Abyan. Brigadier General Ali Nasser Al-Kazmi, Abyan’s Security Director, confirmed that wide-scale sweeps were conducted in the area, reiterating the continuation of the campaign to secure the border areas between Abyan and Shabwa and to block the infiltration routes of terrorist elements.

In the neighboring Shabwa governorate, the Southern Forces carried out targeted operations against Al-Qaeda hideouts. On June 13, 2023, a special unit from the First Brigade of Shabwa Defense struck the organization’s positions south of Ataq city, resulting in casualties among the militants. Media reports emphasized that these operations were a response to the organization’s attacks on security and military units in the governorate.

On November 11, 2024, the Second Brigade Support and Reinforcement Forces repelled an attack by Al-Qaeda elements in Wadi Omran, located in the Mudiyah district. The militants employed sniper tactics from a distance, injuring one soldier. However, the Southern Forces managed to pursue the attackers and conduct sweeps in the area, forcing them to retreat.

Challenges and Expectations for the Southern Forces in Combating Terrorism

As the Southern Armed Forces intensify their campaign against Al-Qaeda in South of Yemen, they face a series of challenges and evolving dynamics that require careful planning and sustained efforts. What the Southern Forces can expect as they continue their operations:

Terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda are known for their ability to adapt quickly to military pressures. The Southern Forces should anticipate an increase in guerrilla tactics, including hit-and-run attacks, ambushes, and the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The organization may also attempt to relocate its operatives to other regions, seeking refuge in less-monitored or inaccessible areas.

Moreover, After liberating strategic locations like the Wadi Itsaba camp, the challenge shifts to holding these areas. Al-Qaeda could attempt to regain control or sabotage infrastructure to destabilize the region. Maintaining a strong and visible presence, alongside establishing local governance and support systems, will be essential to prevent the resurgence of extremist activities.

The ongoing conflict inevitably places local populations at risk. Al-Qaeda may target civilians to spread fear or retaliate against communities perceived as supporting the Southern Forces. Winning the trust and cooperation of local communities is vital, as this provides valuable intelligence and weakens the organization's influence. Ensuring the safety of civilians and addressing their humanitarian needs should be a priority.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) operates not just within Yemen but also across its borders, posing a regional threat. The Southern Forces should prepare for potential cross-border support networks or attacks, particularly in coordination with allied forces in neighboring regions. Strengthening partnerships with regional and international allies is critical to counter this transnational threat.

Sustained military operations like "Arrows of the East" place significant strain on personnel, equipment, and logistics. Al-Qaeda may exploit moments of fatigue or logistical shortages to regroup or counterattack. The Southern Forces must ensure consistent supply chains, regular troop rotations, and ongoing morale-boosting initiatives to maintain operational effectiveness.

Also, Al-Qaeda and similar organizations are increasingly leveraging online platforms to recruit, spread propaganda, and coordinate activities. The Southern Forces should enhance their cyber capabilities to monitor, disrupt, and counter such operations. Efforts should also include creating counter-narratives to undermine the organization’s ideological influence.

The Southern Forces’ success against Al-Qaeda aligns with broader international counterterrorism objectives. Strengthening partnerships with entities like the Saudi-led coalition and Western allies can provide access to advanced technology, intelligence-sharing, and financial support. However, maintaining autonomy in decision-making and ensuring that foreign interventions align with local priorities will be critical.

Military victories are only part of the solution. The Southern Forces must coordinate with political leaders and humanitarian organizations to stabilize liberated areas. Investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and employment opportunities can address the root causes of extremism, ensuring that terrorism does not reemerge.

Yemen’s complex political landscape presents additional challenges. Rivalries among various factions or interference from external powers could complicate operations. Maintaining unity within southern forces and focusing on shared goals is crucial to sustaining progress against Al-Qaeda.

The Southern Armed Forces are making significant strides in combating Al-Qaeda in South of Yemen, but the fight is far from over. Success will require a multi-faceted approach that combines military operations with intelligence gathering, civilian engagement, and long-term development. By anticipating these challenges and preparing accordingly, the Southern Forces can continue to advance their mission to bring stability and security to the southern regions of Yemen.
