NATO and International Values

South Eye | Report - Exclusive

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s call for the international community to act decisively against threats from Russia underscores the importance of global stance in preserving stability. This plea is particularly poignant for South Yemen, a region whose people understand the cost of undermined sovereignty and the value of collective strength. The parallels between South' struggle for independence and Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty reveal a shared narrative of resilience, sacrifice, and the pursuit of freedom against systemic threats.

South has demonstrated steadfast support for principles the West espouses, including human rights, the fight against terrorism, and regional stability. In a time when stance against aggression is critical, South has shown solidarity with Ukraine, emphasizing shared values and a mutual understanding of the devastating consequences of foreign interference and that's what the president of STC Aidroos Al Zubaidi declare in a meeting with Guardian. This alignment highlights South’s potential to be a reliable partner to the international community, not only in addressing regional issues but also in contributing to global stability.

Yet, this willingness to cooperate is met with Western ambivalence toward South’s aspirations for independence. The international community’s reluctance to support South Yemen’s legitimate bid for statehood raises questions about the consistency of its commitment to the principles of self-determination, human rights & global stability. This discrepancy becomes more glaring when viewed against the strong Western support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, showcasing a selective approach to these values.

Diplomatically, South has extended its hand to the West, expressing readiness to align itself with international priorities. Its openness to dialogue, progressive stances on sensitive issues, and commitment to combating terrorism are all indicative of its desire to integrate into the global order as a stable and cooperative partner. However, the absence of meaningful support for its independence risks alienating a potential ally at a time when geopolitical alliances are more crucial than ever.

Furthermore, for how many times we should confirm about the South's strategic location along critical maritime routes which makes it a valuable partner for addressing global security challenges, including threats to free navigation. Also Its cooperation with the Arab Coalition recently and its previous historic ties to nations beyond the region underline its capacity & reliability to contribute to broader stability as regional ally. Ignoring its people' aspirations may force South to seek alternative alliances with nations whom support South directly without any conditions, potentially complicating Western efforts to secure influence in the region.

Hence, the West must acknowledge that supporting South’s independence aligns with its broader geopolitical interests. By respecting the region’s aspirations, the international community would not only uphold the principles it advocates for but also secure a reliable ally in a strategically critical region. South's people, much like the Ukrainians, have shown resilience in the face of adversity. Supporting their cause would reaffirm the universality of self-determination and reinforce a global coalition united against aggression and instability.

As the West continues to confront challenges to international order, South’s case offers an opportunity to demonstrate consistency and commitment to its values. Just as Ukraine’s struggle has galvanized international support, South’s fair quest for independence deserves recognition and backing, fostering a partnership rooted in shared principles and mutual respect. By doing so, the West would not only bolster its credibility but also strengthen a potential ally whose alignment with global stability remains steadfast.
