Report | The Strategic Necessity of Strengthening International Cooperation with the Southern Transitional Council

South Eye | Aden

In light of the multiple crises facing the south, the urgent need to enhance international cooperation with the Southern Transitional Council (STC) becomes evident. The council plays a pivotal role in combating terrorism and extremism, requiring effective support from the international community to continue its efforts in achieving security and stability, as well as fostering economic growth and rehabilitation in the areas that has liberated from terrorism.

The STC is a cornerstone in the fight against terrorism in the south, as evidenced on the ground in Aden capital, Abyan, Shabwa, and Hadramout, where STC seeks to establish security foundations. According to security reports, extremist groups such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS remain real threats, exploiting difficult economic conditions, unemployment, and the deterioration of formal education to attract youth towards extremism.

Therefore, enhancing the council's capabilities through military and technical support can mitigate the spread of these groups. It is crucial for the international community to adopt a comprehensive strategy that includes intelligence-sharing and providing training to southern security forces.

Major powers such USA, UK, EU, GGC, international organizations and UN must strengthen close cooperation with the Southern Transitional Council as a key partner in the pursuit of security and stability. This support should encompass:

Humanitarian assistance to meet the needs of populations affected by conflict without involving it in political disputes through local entities aligned with political parties.
Technical support to enhance security infrastructure and develop effective action plans to combat terrorism.

Additionally, emphasis should be placed on the importance of enhancing economic stability, which represents the fundamental solution to the problem.

Historically, economic dimensions have been integral to combating extremism. Poverty and unemployment create fertile ground for terrorist organizations. Therefore, the international community must:

Invest in development projects by supporting infrastructure development programs and improving essential services such as education and health.
Create job opportunities to stimulate economic growth and provide alternatives for youth away from extremist ideologies and local and regional polarizations.

Several reports indicate that some local parties exploit the current social and economic conditions in the south to promote their extremist ideas. Hence, it is vital to develop awareness programs that highlight the risks posed by these groups and to raise public awareness about the importance of security and stability. Efforts should also be made to build partnerships with local civil southern organizations to strengthen civil society and support local initiatives that promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

The close relationship between the Southern Transitional Council and the international community is essential and strategic for combating terrorism and enhancing stability in the south. Through effective support and strategic partnerships, it is possible to build a secure and prosperous future for the southern people, free from the influences of poverty and extremism. Investing time and effort in this partnership is an investment in peace and security throughout the region. The current economic, social, and educational conditions serve the parties that created this situation to facilitate the recruitment of youth politically and religiously, complicating the crisis and hindering peace efforts. Thus, the international community is required urgently to assume greater responsibility by directly enhancing cooperation with southern forces, providing necessary resources and training to expand their security activities, and provide sustainable recommendations to strengthen financial oversight, combat corruption, activate local revenues and developmental investments to improve the quality of life for southerns, which impacting economic and social stability directly & sustainably.
