Four Soldiers Martyred and Five Militants Killed: Details of the Terrorist Attack that Shook the Government Complex in Al-Mahfad

In what is considered the most dangerous terrorist operation since the beginning of this year, elements of Al-Qaeda launched an attack early Tuesday morning on the government complex in Al-Mahfad District, Abyan Governorate, which serves as the headquarters of the 1st Support and Reinforcement Brigade.

The attackers used two car bombs, followed by an assault carried out by suicide militants armed with machine guns and medium-caliber weapons.

A field source reported that the twin explosions rocked the city around 6:00 a.m., followed by intense clashes that continued until 8:30 a.m., during which southern forces managed to repel the militants’ attempt to storm the complex. The first vehicle was destroyed before reaching the main gate, while the second exploded outside the perimeter of the building.

The source added that the terrorists who attempted to infiltrate the complex and the brigade’s command headquarters were wearing military uniforms for disguise, but the soldiers managed to detect their movements and confront them, resulting in the killing and wounding of several attackers. Security accounts affiliated with the Support and Reinforcement Brigades published images showing the dead bodies of several militants who were neutralized during the attack.

Eyewitnesses said the powerful explosions caused extensive damage to several nearby buildings and shops. The blast wave even reached Al-Mahfad General Hospital, causing material damage despite its relative distance from the target site — reflecting the strength of the explosions and the amount of explosives used.

Brigadier General Nasser Atef Al-Yafei, Commander of the Support and Reinforcement Brigades, Commander of the 1st Support and Reinforcement Brigade, and Commander of the Abyan Combat Axis, confirmed that the southern forces heroically foiled the large-scale terrorist attack and managed to eliminate five suicide militants wearing explosive belts as they attempted to infiltrate the government complex.

Brig. Gen. Al-Yafei stated that the attack resulted in the martyrdom of four soldiers from the 1st Support and Reinforcement Brigade while they were confronting the terrorists, praising their courage and steadfastness in defending their positions and repelling the attack.

He added that after the clashes, the brigade’s forces regained full control of the situation and combed the surroundings of the complex, confirming that the terrorists suffered heavy losses and that the remaining elements fled toward the rugged mountainous areas east of the district.

The Abyan Axis Commander pointed out that this attack comes as part of Al-Qaeda’s desperate attempts to prove its existence following the severe blows it has suffered in Abyan and Shabwa over the past two years at the hands of the southern armed forces. He affirmed that the Support and Reinforcement Brigades remain on high alert and will continue their war against terrorism until the province is completely cleared of the organization’s hideouts.

In recent months, Al-Mahfad District has witnessed a series of successful security operations targeting Al-Qaeda strongholds in the mountains and remote areas, amid official assurances that the battle against terrorism will continue until security and stability are fully restored throughout Abyan.
