Trump Threat & Mulino Emphasis

REPORTS - منذ 1 شهر

In a recent statement, President-elect Donald Trump threatened to reassert U.S. control over the Panama Canal, accusing Panama of overcharging for passage rates and expressing concerns about potential Chinese influence in the region. He suggested that if Panama does not adhere to what he describes as the "moral and legal" principles of the 1977 accords that transferred control to Panama in 1999, the U.S. might demand the canal be returned to American control.

In response, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino firmly rejected Trump's demand, defending Panama's sovereignty and asserting that the canal's administration is independent of Chinese influence. He emphasized that the canal is a vital asset for Panama and that any opposition to the canal sovereignty agreement lacks validity.
This exchange highlights the ongoing complexities surrounding the management of the Panama Canal and the geopolitical dynamics between the United States and Panama. While the canal remains a crucial artery for global commerce, its future remains tied to the delicate balance of international diplomacy, economic interests, and the strategic objectives of the U.S. and other key players in the region.
