The South: A Cornerstone in the Equation of Security and Stability

South Eye | Report - Exclusive

Amid the rapidly evolving regional landscape, security and stability are no longer the sole responsibility of major powers. Recognizing the importance of effective local partnerships capable of addressing threats on the ground has become essential. Today, it's clear for all that the South is not a region affected by conflicts; it is an active player that has proven its ability to counter terrorism in all its forms. This makes it a fundamental pillar in any international strategy aimed at safeguarding regional security and protecting global interests.

Experience has shown that ignoring genuine partners on the ground leads only to security vacuums exploited by terrorist groups and armed factions seeking unstable environments to expand their influence. Therefore, direct empowering the South to manage its own affairs and enhancing its military and security capabilities for sure is not just a political choice as some locals imagine, it's a strategic necessity dictated by the realities of the ongoing conflict. The Southern Transitional Council (STC) and its armed forces have demonstrated their ability to impose stability and secure the areas under their control, at a time when many other entities have failed to provide even a basic level of security.

Today, following the inclusion of Houthi leaders on international terrorism lists, attention is shifting toward the next steps needed to ensure this threat is effectively addressed. While the designation itself is significant, it holds little real value unless it is translated into concrete actions on the ground to prevent this group from continuing its terrorist activities whether by targeting international shipping routes or destabilizing neighboring countries. In this context, the South remains the most capable force to execute this mission, thanks to its strategic location along key maritime corridors and the extensive experience its forces have gained in combating terrorism in various forms.

However, the real challenge extends beyond confronting Houthi terrorism to preventing any attempts to create an environment of instability that could allow other extremist groups whether affiliated with ISIS or driven by external agendas to emerge. Security chaos in any part of the South inevitably translates into a broader threat that extends to the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and even global security. Therefore, real enabling the Southern leadership to manage security affairs, free from obstructive interference, is an urgent necessity dictated by strategic considerations rather than mere political demands.

One of the biggest mistakes made by some international powers in the past was relying on actors incapable of establishing real stability, which resulted in a persistent state of security imbalance in the region. Today, with the situation becoming clearer, it is imperative to reassess partnership dynamics and invest in forces that have demonstrated their effectiveness on the ground, rather than repeating past miscalculations. The South today represents a real model of a capable local force that can safeguard both its own interests and those of its international partners in countering terrorism and foreign interventions that seek to keep the region in a perpetual state of turmoil.

Securing the region whether from terrorist threats or external domination such Iran, of course will not be achieved without a reliable local partner with the will and capability to protect its security and sovereignty. The Southern Transitional Council, with its legitimacy derived from the will of its people, is the most capable force to play this role, particularly if it receives sufficient support and necessary cooperation from the international community. The next phase will not be easy, and the looming risks require bold decisions that realign priorities based on current realities, rather than outdated calculations that have brought only further instability.

The world now faces a crucial test: either support effective forces on the ground to establish lasting stability or allow terrorism another opportunity to reshape the landscape according to its own agenda. The South, with its strategic position and vital role, is a key part of this equation, and betting on it has never been a losing strategy for those who seek security, stability, sustainable valuable partnership and cooperation.
