Important movements are underway as part of the peaceful political activism aimed at delivering the voice of the Southern people to international decision-makers, among them the U.S. administration, congressional institutions, and influential think tanks. These actions reflect a mature level of political awareness now demonstrated by Southerners in the diaspora, and their ability to advocate for their legitimate cause within internationally recognized legal and diplomatic frameworks and on the ground as well.

The Southern activity in the United States is grounded in the principle that the people of the South are not demanding what they do not own, but rather seeking to reclaim what is rightfully theirs: a sovereign state that entered into a unity agreement in 1990. That unity was effectively dismantled after the 1994 war, which led to systematic marginalization and monopolization of power and wealth—turning unity into a form of disguised occupation. Members of the Southern diaspora base their demands on legal principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and international conventions, stressing that the time has come to seriously reconsider the South’s status and to restore its previous seat at the United Nations as a fully sovereign, independent state.

In a first-of-its-kind event in terms of coordination and organization, the U.S. capital Washington, D.C., is preparing to receive a delegation of Southerners from across various U.S. states. This peaceful national mobilization seeks to raise awareness about the Southern cause, while rejecting attempts to distort or hijack it by parties that have lost their legitimacy. The significance of this event lies in the fact that it is led by Southern professional and delivers the Southern narrative in a legal and rights-based manner. This approach strengthens national resolve and grants the movements a grassroots legitimacy that cannot be ignored.

The Southern delegation will focus on several key issues, most notably presenting documented files on human rights violations, and calling for an end to both the direct and indirect support provided by certain states to the Houthi militia—a support that poses a direct threat to the security of the South, the region, and international maritime routes. The delegation will also emphasize the need to enhance security in the South as a pillar of regional stability and will affirm that the South has always played—and continues to play—a vital role in counterterrorism efforts.

Another important dimension of this mobilization is highlighting the cultural and religious identity of the South, which has been subject to exclusion and erasure since the 1994 war, despite the South’s well-known history of social diversity and civic openness. The delegation seeks to demonstrate that the South, with its values and societal structure, offers a favorable environment for international cooperation in building a peaceful future, regional integration, and exchange of knowledge and expertise.

Among the key political messages of this activity is the reaffirmation by Southern diaspora members of their popular mandate for the Southern Transitional Council (STC), led by President Aidarous Al-Zubaidi, as the legitimate political representative of the Southern cause. This mandate has been expressed through broad popular consensus around a unified Southern national leadership advocating for independence, most notably represented in the mass popular rallies, most notably the historic Aden Declaration.

This balanced and organized movement represents a mature model of political activism in the diaspora. It reshapes the image of the Southerner as a civil and political actor committed to realizing national aspirations through legal and rights-based means. It also elevates the Southern cause as a just cause with legal, historical, political, and regional security dimensions that deserve international recognition.
