UNDP Continues Empowering Communities Across Southern governorates with Vital Projects and Training Programs

In its commitment to support sustainable development and empowerment in South Yemen, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has spearheaded multiple initiatives aimed at enhancing education, food security, women’s rights, and community resilience. These projects, funded through partnerships with the European Union, the World Bank, and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief), reflect a substantial investment in the southern communities’ social and economic wellbeing.

Women’s Empowerment and Skill Development

Textile Training in Tooralbaha & Alhota, Lahj Governorate: Sixty-seven young women successfully completed technical training in textile skills, preparing them for employment and business opportunities within their communities. This initiative not only equips women with technical knowledge but also provides them with a sustainable livelihood pathway.

Food Processing Training in Hadramaut: In Tareem and Seiyun, 50 women graduated from food processing training under the Social Protection Project, funded by KSRelief. The program enhances their income-generating capabilities, supporting both family sustenance and community stability.

Women, Peace, and Security Training in Aden Capital: UNDP concluded a specialized training on Women, Peace, and Security for 20 general directors from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor. This program, designed to enhance policy understanding and implementation, focuses on integrating women’s issues into the peace-building framework in region

Education Infrastructure Expansion

School Capacity Expansion in Al-Mansora District, Aden: Addressing the pressing need for educational space, UNDP, with funding from the EU’s SIERY Project, collaborated with local authorities to expand Ahmed Hamed Khalifa School by adding new classrooms. This upgrade aims to reduce classroom overcrowding and foster a more conducive learning environment for young students, particularly as education infrastructure remains a crucial need in the region.

Advancing Food Security

Irrigation Canal Development in Mukalla: With funding from the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) and implemented with the Social Fund for Development (SFD), UNDP has completed a series of cash-for-work projects in Ghail Bawazir and Shihr. Local farmers were employed to construct and upgrade thousands of meters of irrigation canals, addressing both short-term employment needs and long-term agricultural sustainability. These improved irrigation systems directly benefit local food production, contributing to Yemen’s overall food security.

Community Resilience and Problem-Solving Skills

Capacity-Building for Community Committees in Aden: Through the SFISH Project, funded by the World Bank Middle East and North Africa (MENA) division and in partnership with the Small and Micro Enterprise Promotion Service (SMEPS Yemen), UNDP is equipping local community committees with advanced problem-solving skills. This initiative promotes self-sufficiency by enhancing the ability of communities to address local challenges and improve livelihoods autonomously.

These initiatives underscore UNDP’s commitment to fostering sustainable development, addressing social challenges, and improving economic stability in South Yemen. Through targeted training, infrastructure development, and resource management projects, UNDP and its partners continue to support resilient communities that contribute positively to the broader vision of peace and prosperity in the region.
