The Southern Transitional Council has sent an official letter to the United Nations Security Council, expressing deep concern over what it described as escalating human rights violations in southern Yemen since the beginning of 2026, and calling for urgent international action to stop these violations and launch an independent investigation.

In its letter, the Council pointed to dozens of cases of arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance, as well as civilian casualties resulting from the use of force against peaceful protesters in several southern governorates, including Al-Dhalea, Shabwa, Aden, and Hadramout. It also highlighted damage to civilian facilities, including ports, airports, and healthcare centers, as well as the targeting of ambulances while carrying out humanitarian duties.

The letter stated that these incidents have been verified through reports by international human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, which has expressed concern over the excessive use of force against civilians in the south.

In the political context, the Council criticized what it described as a lack of transparency regarding the Southern Dialogue Conference announced by Saudi Arabia, noting the continued closure of its offices and the detention of a number of its leaders—reflecting, according to the letter, an exclusionary approach that contradicts any comprehensive political process.

The Southern Transitional Council reaffirmed its commitment to a political solution based on UN Security Council resolutions, emphasizing that the people of the south are a key party in any sustainable settlement and have the right to self-determination.

In conclusion, the Council called on the UN Security Council to condemn the targeting of civilian protesters, support an independent international investigation, ensure fair and inclusive representation of the south in the political process, and push for greater transparency in any upcoming political dialogue.

The Council warned that the continuation of violations and the exclusion of southern forces from the political process undermine the chances of reaching a lasting peaceful solution, urging the international community to take a firm stance in line with its responsibility to maintain peace and stability.
