Crossing the Red Lines… How Does the Closure of Southern Transitional Council Institutions Trigger a Political Earthquake in Aden?

The capital, Aden, has witnessed a serious and dramatic development after military forces besieged the headquarters of the General Secretariat and the National Assembly of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), preventing employees from entering their workplaces.

This escalation, seen as a blow to existing understandings, places the fragile stability of the capital under a real test amid warnings that such “arbitrary conduct” could spark a broader confrontation.

Targeting the STC’s institutions is not a routine administrative or security measure; rather, it represents a blatant crossing of red lines and a direct affront to the political identity embodied by the Council as the carrier of the Southern cause.

Preventing the General Secretariat, the National Assembly, and the Foreign Affairs Authority from performing their duties is regarded in Southern political norms as an attack on the people’s will and a clear attempt to paralyze the national effectiveness that Southerners have built through years of struggle and sacrifice. This step is therefore viewed as an unacceptable attempt to impose military guardianship.

Moreover, the reported reliance by parties led by Rashad Al-Alimi, backed by Saudi Arabia, on military force to obstruct civilian political institutions sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the civil nature of political activity and entrenches the logic of imposing realities by force.

Such condemned behavior not only threatens the political balance but also risks severe consequences that could destabilize social peace in Aden. Displays of force in the political arena inevitably deepen public tension and open the door to scenarios of disorder, jeopardizing security and stability.

In response, Southern reactions have been firm at both the popular and official levels, emphasizing that Southern national institutions are not mere buildings to be shut down, but popular entitlements safeguarded by the will of the people.

Notably, the Southern stance highlights unity in protecting these gains, based on the belief that silence over such actions would encourage further escalation.

The clear message today is that policies of “restriction and intimidation” will only strengthen the Southern public’s attachment to its political institutions and reinforce the STC’s determination to continue the path toward restoring statehood, free from pressures aimed at circumventing the people’s aspirations.
